JE NE SAIS QUOI
JE NE SAIS QUOI
I believe designing and styling are inherent in every being.
On some level, whether overwhelming or seemingly diminutive – one can see some sign of preference (positive/negative/indifference) to things that surround us.
Some may have the obvious inclinations much earlier on by having or expressing opinions and choices from very young ages. As a child, there are many stories about my preferences when it came to wardrobe, especially bows (which I was somehow notoriously opposed). That quickly progressed to my room and constant re-arranging of furniture and accessories.
I will say having a mother (who was a model for a stint) with impeccable taste and a confidence to do things once (executed perfectly the first time) and let it be…. Was a lesson on a ’ Je ne sais quois ‘ level of the most mindful choices authentic to who she was and the life she wanted .
I had no such luck with self-control – I needed things to be always shifting, bending and adjusting to moods and moments as I evolved. Satisfaction eluded me.
Over the years, getting to meet and engage with so many inspirational people within the vast world of design (interiors, fashion, textiles, furniture, architects, hair & make-up professionals, set design, lighting, landscape, to product design, package design, tech, and on and on) – you quickly realize that design or aesthetics play the front and center role in so many industries.
Visual beauty (along with each of our other senses-taste, hear, touch, & smell) is what sets moods and potential outcomes.
Design can harness the power to set or change the course of any day – it can be something that soothes us and drives us. It can transport us from past to present and future in any order (individually or simultaneously).
That is power.
